DETROIT - Bills kicker Dan Carpenter responded to an alleged laser pointer shining from the stands in Detroit with laser-point accuracy. After banking a 50-yard attempt off the left upright in the third quarter, Carpenter split the goal posts from 58 yards with 4 seconds left for a 17-14 come-from-behind victory over the Lions on Sunday.I hit it really good. It was one of those things I really like to not leave opportunities like that short, said Carpenter. I hit the ball really well, a lot better than I did on the 50-yarder.And this time, there wasnt a laser shining in holder Colton Schmidts face, as apparently happened on the earlier miss. The Bills filed a complaint with NFL security officials after both Schmidt and quarterback Kyle Orton said that someone in the stands was shining a laser pointer at them.Without going into detail, coach Doug Marrone said the issue was resolved before the game ended. In fact, Marrone said, the laser was less of a distraction than it was a motivator. We felt that Dan could do it, Marrone said. At that point, with the adrenaline and everything, he was fired up.NFL spokesman Michael Signora said the league was waiting for its security representative in Detroit to file a game report. The Lions said in a statement that they were aware of the reports and contacted NFL security regarding the issue. The Bills (3-2) snapped a two-game skid in Ortons debut as Buffalos starter after EJ Manuel was benched this week. And their defence had six sacks in delivering co-ordinator Jim Schwartz a win in his return to Detroit after being fired as Lions head coach last season. The Lions were undone by placekicking. Alex Henery missed all three field goals attempts, including a 50-yarder that sailed wide left with 21 seconds remaining.Coach Jim Caldwell was already hinting of being ready to make another switch at kicker two weeks after Henery was signed to replace rookie Nate Freese. Its a performance-based league, plain and simple, and you have to perform, Caldwell said. Anyone that doesnt, we take a look and see if we can improve that one way or another. The Lions (3-2) squandered a 14-0 lead, dropped to 2-1 at home and also lost several key regulars to injury.Receiver Calvin Johnson did not return after aggravating a right ankle injury in the first minute of the third quarter. Starting running back Reggie Bush didnt finish the game after also hurting his ankle.Johnson was hurt when he reached down to make a 7-yard catch and was immediately hit low by cornerback Leodis McKelvin. Johnson clutched his right ankle and was briefly treated on the field. He then got up and slowly walked off the field.Caldwell called the hit as a pretty good whack, but said it was too early to determine the severity of the injury.Golden Tate picked up the slack with seven catches for 134 yards and a 9-yard touchdown catch. The Lions defence assisted the offence, with cornerback Rashean Mathis returning an Orton interception 41 yards for a score.Quarterback Matthew Stafford went 18 of 31 for 221 yards with a touchdown and interception.Orton bounced back from a slow start and the interception. It wasnt the first and it wont be my last, said the 10-year journeyman who improved his career record to 36-35, including a perfect 5-0 against Detroit. Youve got to keep that trigger, and put a little bit more pressure on yourself to make the plays next time.He finished 30 of 43 for 308 yards with a 2-yard touchdown to Chris Gragg. And he set up the decisive score by hitting rookie Sammy Watkins over the middle for a 20-yard gain. The ball was thrown behind Watkins, but he reached back with his right hand, tipping the ball forward and making the grab.Defensive tackle Marcell Dareus had five tackles and a career-best three sacks. He had several reasons to be motivated. He wanted to step up with fellow starter and mentor Kyle Williams sidelined by a knee injury. And then he wanted to win for Schwartz. It really meant more to him than just a game, said Dareus. We all took it to ourselves to go out and do the best we could for Schwartz and for the team, and just pull it out.NOTES: Bills RB Fred Jackson followed Graggs touchdown with a rush for the 2-point conversion that tied the game with 9:23 left. ... Orton won a game for the eighth time when tied or trailing in the fourth quarter or in overtime. ... The Lions have allowed 16 sacks in the past four games. ... Detroits kickers have hit just 4 of 12 field-goal attempts.___AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and http://twitter.com/AP_NFL(backslash) Steve Pearce Jersey . To Jennings, finishing a season the right way is important, even one so devoid of hope as the current 3-9 debacle. Were still playing for so much, said Jennings, who took part in limited practice with his right ankle taped after sitting out the first two days. Everybodys playing for so much. Critiquing ourselves, getting better, creating building blocks, showing the younger guys how to finish.I always say nobodys forcing me to do this. I could walk right out of here, get in my car and go home. But I love this sport. I love this game.Jennings, the Giants rushing leader with 598 yards and four touchdowns on 154 carries, owns a 3.9-yard average. That represents a full yard more than the 2.9 his backup Andre Williams has in 134 carries, including during five starting assignments while Jennings recovered from a midseason MCL strain. The Giants rank 22nd in the league in rushing offence.Between that and his injuries, 2014 has not been the kind of season the 6-foot-1, 234-pound Jennings expected. The former Jaguar and Raider signed a four-year, $10 million free agent deal this off-season.But he said he has a chance to finish strong, providing the medical staff clears him.It matters how you finish, Jennings said. It matters because it sets a precedent for next year.We knew last week we werent going into the playoffs. Were playing for pride, playing for the man beside you, playing because its a privilege. This is our resume. The act of finishing has not been one of the Giants strong points this year. In fact, the last four games of November saw fourth-quarter collapses that stretched a losing streak to seven games and put Tom Coughlin squarely on the coaching hot seat. All Jennings can do now is improve his statistics and help his rookie backup, Williams, become a better player.Me and Shad talk every day and we watch the film and he shares his wisdom with me, said Williams. Thats the goal from the beginning, to finish, because thats the point. I certainly believe in that.dddddddddddd I feel like, even though the record doesnt show it, I grew from the season and learned things about the game.Williams might have another chance to grow. If Jennings cant make it, Williams will start and Tulane rookie Orleans Darkwa, picked up from the Dolphins practice squad Nov. 12, will become the primary backup. Darkwa could come in for third-down pass blocking.Hes doing well. Hes had a full week of practice in that role, Coughlin said.Regardless if it is Jennings, Williams or Darkwa running the ball, Jennings wants to see an end to the current cycle. Hed like to be part of some improvement, pain or not.It matters how you finish, Jennings said. Andre and all the other running backs, just teach them how to finish. We watch the film, theres a lot of self-inflicted wounds. So my mindset is to be able to change the culture for next year.Finish strong.NOTES: LB Jacquian Williams (concussion) and T James Brewer were ruled out. Brewer missed the entire week of practice, and Jennings missed two of the three days. . Coughlin was noncommittal when asked about shutting down Williams for the season because of repeated concussion symptoms. I dont know, he said. But hes a long way into (the protocol). Hes in his third week. Williams returned to practice Wednesday, only to miss Thursday and Friday when headaches forced him back into the concussion protocol. The symptoms have to be cleared up before theres any opportunity there, Coughlin said. If hes in a position where he feels good and then he doesnt feel good, the clock begins again there.. LB Mark Herzlich (concussion) is questionable after returning to limited practice Friday. LB Jameel McClain (knee), WR Preston Parker (knee), DT Cullen Jenkins (calf), CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie (back/shoulder), and T Justin Pugh (quad) are probable. . McClain said rattling Titans quarterback Zach Mettenberger will not be easy because of the rookies innate poise. Hes pretty good in the pocket against pressure for a rookie, McClain said. Hes pretty accurate, and thats impressive to me. You dont see too many rookies going out there and doing the things hes doing. Since making his first start Oct. 26 in place of Charlie Whitehurst, Mettenberger has gone 93 of 155 for 1,287 yards with eight touchdowns and six interceptions. He ranks as the top rookie quarterback with an 87.8 passer rating.___AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFL ' ' '
